Did My Heart Give Me a Bum Steer?

You locked eyes for the first time and felt that ecstatic rush of euphoria. Oh my gosh yes! There isn’t a shadow of a doubt that this is the path to follow. When you’re together, everything just flows with ease. This is pure bliss! How can this be so perfect? Swept away in a whirlwind romance, you lose your bearings to some degree but who cares? This is magic and surely, they are the one. Finally! After all those years; after searching and leaving no stone unturned; after kissing a million toads in the hope of finding that prince (or princess or other non-binary amphibian-disguised-royalty). This is it!

But then, almost as suddenly as it happened, it has dissolved and you are left bewildered and utterly devastated. What the…? Seriously! Did my heart give me a bum steer? How could I have been so stupid? I really thought they were perfect for me! How could I have been so wrong? Whaddup Universe!?

Good question. What is up with that? Well, the short answer is, no, your heart didn’t give you a bum steer. In fact, your heart can and always will guide you. However, (you knew that was coming, didn’t you?) you do have a choice to listen to your heart or not. You can measure what your heart is telling you against your sensibilities, wisdom, experience and discernment, weigh it all up and then decide how to proceed.

Listening to your heart and going all in is extremely bold and if you have done this and had your heart broken, I commend you. But only you know how robust you are and whether you can handle the knocks. So, before you approach dating with complete reckless abandon, there are a few good questions to ask yourself; ‘How much am I willing to risk? What are the potential consequences? What are the potential rewards? What am I hoping to achieve through this experience? Am I prepared to face the consequences?’ and ‘Is it worth it?’

If you are emotionally adventurous and willing to ride the waves of ups and downs that exhilarating romantic experiences have to offer, you will be more prepared to follow your heart. A cautious approach is also fine; depending on your preternatural disposition. But if you’ve ever thrown caution to the wind and been let down, it simply means this; you followed your heart, it didn’t work out how you thought it would but it did work out perfectly and this is why…

Every experience you have is shaping you. Every road you walk down is leading to your destination. Life is not only a series of destinations; it is a pathway; a journey and you get to choose your own adventure! Did you experience joy? Did you laugh? Did you play? Did you try something new and have fun? Did you learn new things about who you are? Did you grow? Did you get to spend time with a gorgeous human being who was almost everything you could wish for in a companion? Did you become wiser? Did you tweak your preferences somewhat? Are you a little clearer on what it is that you want now? Do you feel somehow changed? Was your heart cracked open? Were you laid bare, open, vulnerable and finally ready to reveal your true self with the one who cares deeply for you? Have you softened and opened your heart a little? Did you go to the depths of your being and face the hurts of the past that surfaced to be transmuted in the light of your awareness?

No, your heart did not give you a bum steer. Life is guiding you, always. While life can appear to be working against you, it is, in fact, a matter of perspective. Life is always working out for you, if only you consider your experiences from this vantage point. Next time, if things appear to be going wrong, ask yourself, ‘How might I view this differently?’ ‘Is it possible this event is happening for me?’ and ‘How might this be working in my favour?’

Go forth my friend and love. Open your heart and look at the world with adoration. You don’t have to go and kiss a million toads. You can kiss only one, if you should choose. But certainly, do let your heart open. This world needs more heart energy. Appreciate and adore the world in which you live. Look for things to love; your pet, your best friend, your mum, a beautiful smile, the glitter of sunlight on a turquoise sea, a butterfly floating majestically on a gentle breeze, the delightful call of birds celebrating the bounty of a plentiful summer, the tingle on your skin after swimming in an icy ocean, a backlit emerald leaf in the rainforest. Find things to love, adore and appreciate and you will sense that love beaming back to you. Let that be enough. Be here, in this moment. Sense the joy of your being and know that you are complete, here and now, exactly as you are.
